This Seminar takes place on the ISIS-Platform.

ROOM 804 (FRAUNHOFERSTR. 33)

The seminar focuses on the scientific methods of the four root disciplines (Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture and Sociology) of the UD Master; and possibilities of their integration. It consists of sequences with methodological and theoretical input alternating with practical examples and exercises. The aim is to significantly mix methods and tools and give a broad overview of different methods and tools – mirroring the interdisciplinary nature of Urban Design.

The seminar consists of two blocks of teaching:

  • BLOCK 4: SOCIOLOGY & SOCIAL RESEARCH

The course’s aim is to teach the basics of qualitative research in the social sciences focusing on four key methodological approaches. We focus on qualitative data acquisition and data interpretation, advantages and disadvantages of methods.
We discuss which methods suit what kind of questions.

  • BLOCK 5: REFLECTIONS ON M&T

In the second part of the summer-semester, selected methods and tools are going to be elaborated, applied and reflected upon. As a result, we would like to contribute to the collective M&T Manual – a compendium, which is growing year by year. Students are asked to choose one of the methods that were exercised in the four blocks (other methods from the disciplines involved can be chosen after consultation with the supervisors).
